Marching into the scene from the US underground comes Eagle’s Nest’s debut assault titled, Purification. This album is rich with atmosphere and hard hitting riffs of volkish pride. This debut is coming off the back of their well received demo “A Legacy Reborn… Forever Written in Blood” which presented the band as much more raw and lofi, relying much more on the moody production rather than just straight raw riffs like Purification.
This album greets you with the sound of epic guitars beginning their march forward through the musical battlefield. The riffs are rythmic, simple, and raw, sporting a mid-paced melodic approach but can quickly change on a dime. Going from melodic blasting beats, to soft old-world acoustic passages that manifests that prideful nature. The vocals are rather standard given this style of black metal, harsh, prideful, and dripping with hate. It simply sufficies and wraps the music together nicely.
I truly appreciate the simplicity of this album. They don’t hold onto some sorta aesthetic gimmick or lean into some musical trend. Eagle’s Nest presents black metal how it should be. Raw, aggressive, and filled with a prideful hate that no other genre can truly match.
While I understand there would be some who may be put off by the rather controversial aesthetic this album presents, those who can look past that and appreciate the music at hand, they’ll see that this album is close to a modern day great. After all, black metal was never supposed to be easy to approach, let alone be welcoming to everyone. It started out as a way to rile up Christian traditionalists with the genre’s satanic aesthetic. So it makes sense that the modern day Satan in our hyper secular society would be that certain German political nationalist group.
At the end of the day, this is a phenomenal album with a lot of memorable riffs that will stand the test of time, remaining fresh and modern for a long time. For any true fan of black metal, especially old school Nordic black metal, this is the album for you. It’s the essence of the old wrapped in a new package.
