Hailing from the hollows of Kentucky, Brood in Black presents us with their blasphemous offering, Black Unholy Mass, a raw and blasphemous assault on the senses. Grinding guitar riffs, harsh vocals, and abrasive drums is what to expect from this release. Its certainly a spawn of the filthy underground. This is a straight forward release. No pandering to some aesthetic or crowd, just pure, unadulterated, satanic black metal.
The drums are aggressive, the riffs raw, and the vocals blasphemous, there’s little else way to describe the music at hand. I don’t find that there’s one track that truly stands out from the others, this Black Unholy Mass should be listened to from start to finish, as its certainly better appreciated as a whole. The production though, does give the overall release this homogeneous feeling, where tracks do kind of blend together, but it harkens back to the older black metal releases of the second-wave. I find the drums to be my favorite aspect of this release, having this constant assault that never lets up through out the album. It compliments the guitars very well, and helps give the riffs a great foundation to play off of. The vocals are also a nice touch. Ugly, vulgar, and blasphemous, there’s not much to dissect here, its the type of vocal approach you’d expect with a release like this.
As a whole this was a very enjoyable listen, being their fourth EP release, they certainly have a lot of potential behind them. There are times when other bands try to go way over board when it comes to production or putting on some sort of theme or aesthetic for the release, but this is just a solid, textbook black metal release that skips out on all the games and frills. Sometimes its good to just jump into the thick of it and nod your head to some thumping black metal such as this. Certainly worth checking out.
