Primaevus – An Eldritch Odyssey

Posted on May 20, 2024May 20, 2024 by deshift00

Hailing from the mysteriously mystic mountain tops of the Western Himalayas in Northern India comes Primaevus, an Eldritch force formed by Ankit Sinha and Harul Vinay. By invoking ancient ancestoral spirits, the pair have conjured epic and somber ballads that invoke esoteric imagery of primalistic origins. With the help provided from the talented Alex Pfister who provided the percussions as well as some of the wind instruments. Edward Longo also provides his part with an iconic pipe organ performance.

The album starts with a dreamlike poem written by Clark Ashton Smith, an American writer known for his otherworldly poems and dreamlike landscapes that help shape this album beautifully. With a soulful guitar performance by Harul and a haunting vocal delivery from Ankit, who sounds like one of those ancient souls who reside in the mystical Himalayas. The album continues on a dreamlike journey through spiritual landscapes of old, with plenty of rustic guitar passages and unique but captivating vocal melodies that harmonize together creating some rather powerful evocations.

An Eldritch Odyssey is more than just a new folk album with some dark sensibilities. In fact, Primaevus take it to another level and provide a multisensory experience, through beautiful artwork that has been accompanied by this release as well as the heavy use of classic poetry and beautiful word smithing provided by Ankit, the album touches upon the metaphysical senses as well, luring the listener into that dreamlike meditative state that this album is inspired by.

There’s no doubting just how personal this album feels, both Harul and Ankit have poured their heart and souls into these beautiful mountain hymns and have captured their homeland in a beautiful package that I believe is a must listen for all. Both those who venture into the noisy extremes and the calmer waters of beautiful ambience, this album has something for all. This is an easy recommendation and will most likely be one of the albums I will keep finding myself coming back to over and over.
